Alcatraz Prison

Alcatraz was a maximum-security federal prison located on an island in San Francisco Bay, California, United States. It was in operation from 1934 to 1963, and during that time, it housed some of America’s most notorious and dangerous criminals, including Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly, and Robert Stroud, also known as the “Birdman of Alcatraz.”

Alcatraz was known for its harsh conditions and strict rules. Inmates were subject to a strict daily routine and were not allowed to talk during meals or in the corridors. They were also required to wear uniforms and were only allowed one visit and one letter per month. The prison was also surrounded by strong currents, making escape nearly impossible. Despite this, there were several escape attempts, most notably the 1962 Alcatraz escape, which has become the subject of many movies and books.

After the prison closed in 1963 due to high operating costs and the deteriorating condition of the buildings, Alcatraz Island was designated as a national park and a popular tourist attraction. Today, visitors can take guided tours of the prison and learn about its history and infamous inmates.

  2. Alcatraz always makes my nerve endings tingle. The thought of the USAโ€™s worst criminals all locked up together, including all those mobsters, makes my mind run a little wild. Imagine being a prison guard!!- always under physical threat and bribes.
