Unique Australian Fauna

Australia is home to a unique and diverse range of fauna, with many species found nowhere else in the world. Many of the animals found in Australia are not only unique but are also under threat from habitat loss, climate change, and introduced species.

Australia is home to the only two Monotremes in the world – The Platypus and Echidna (Spiny Anteater). These are a group of mammals that are unique in that they lay eggs rather than giving birth to live young.

Unique marsupials give birth to relatively undeveloped young that continue to develop outside of the womb, typically in a pouch called a marsupium. The most well-known Australian marsupials are the kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, and wombats

Australia is home to a diverse array of reptiles, with over 850 known species. Both Saltwater and Freshwater crocodiles can be found in the northern parts of Australia. The saltwater crocodile is one of the the largest living reptiles. They are aggressive and dangerous to humans. Some of the most venomous snakes in the world an be found in many parts of the country. They contrast with the more docile lizards such as the Blue Tongue Lizard and Bearded Dragon with its spiny scales on its chin.

  1. Thanks Bruce,
Yes. many of our animals are threatened. The trouble is we’ve already lost far too many species. One wonders when the need to protect those that are left will take priority over the possible loss of some votes and donations that the major political parties may lose if they take action in this regard.
