Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a beautiful town located in the state of Bavaria, Germany. It is situated on the Romantic Road, which is a popular tourist route that runs through some of the most scenic parts of Bavaria.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is known for its well-preserved medieval old town, which is surrounded by a fortified wall and towers. The town is home to several beautiful Gothic and Renaissance-style buildings, such as the Town Hall (Rathaus), the St. Jakob’s Church, and the St. Wolfgang’s Church.
It survived WW2 because the mother of the commanding US Air Force Officer had told him about how beautiful was the town and it was thankfully spared from being bombed.
One of the most popular attractions in the town is the Christmas Museum (Weihnachtsmuseum), which showcases the history of Christmas traditions and decorations. The town is also known for its Christmas markets, which are held in the town square during the holiday season.
Visitors to Rothenburg can also explore the town’s history at the Imperial City Museum (Reichsstadtmuseum), which displays artifacts and exhibits related to the town’s past. Additionally, the town’s Night Watchman (Nachtwรคchter) offers guided tours of the town after dark, providing a unique and entertaining way to experience Rothenburg ob der Tauber’s history and architecture. When talking about chamber pots being emptied out of upstairs windows, his best line was that “The good old days weren’t really the good old days”.
Overall, Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a beautiful and historic town that is well worth a visit for anyone interested in Bavarian culture and history.
