The Kosciuszko Plateau is part of the larger Kosciuszko National Park, which is known for its stunning natural beauty and being home to Australia’s highest peak, Mount Kosciuszko. The plateau itself is a vast alpine region characterized by rolling hills, granite outcrops, and unique vegetation.
The track from Guthega across the plateau is the Main Range Track. This track spans approximately 40 kilometres and can takes three to four days to complete. Along the way, you’ll encounter markers and signs to guide you through the route.
As you hike, you have the opportunity to spot a variety of wildlife, including wallabies, wombats, and various bird species. The plateau is also home to the endangered corroboree frog and the mountain pygmy possum, making it a significant conservation area.
The weather on the plateau can be unpredictable, with cool temperatures even during the summer months. It’s important to pack appropriate clothing, including layers, a waterproof jacket, sturdy footwear, and sun protection. Be prepared for sudden changes in weather and ensure you have enough food, water, and navigation tools.
During this bushwalk, you’ll encounter breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including the Snowy Mountains, the Monaro Plains, and the Victorian Alps. You’ll also have the chance to explore the unique alpine flora, including wildflowers, snow gums, and alpine grasses.
The basic environmental rule here is to take nothing but photographs and leave nothing but footprints.
